The Mindful Choices Method for Personal Transformation
ABOUT LIFE COACHING
FOR WELL-BEING
Welcome to Mindful Choices for Well-Being

Become mindfully aware, make great choices, and turn those great choices into powerful and positive habits.

You probably know what you don’t want, but what do you want more of in your life?

Do you want to feel more centered and balanced? More focused and creative? More energized and engaged? More physical strength, vitality, energy, and good health? More confidence and feelings of self-worth? More self-acceptance? More satisfying relationships? Greater satisfaction with your work life? More control over your personal life? More fun? More contentment and peacefulness?

Do you want to be powerfully motivated for sustained goal-directed behavior leading to well-being?.

We have created a program to not only help you manage psychological and emotional issues, and the behaviors that negatively impact your life, but it’s also a guide on a clear and compelling pathway to well-being. We coach you in  a self-directed system for personal transformation developed through decades of work helping others grow and thrive

We want you to “thrive.” We want you to wake up each morning full of enthusiasm about your life. We want you to feel confident, optimistic, and empowered, living your values, having compassion for self and others, and finding purpose and meaning in each day. Experiencing your life with such a high degree of satisfaction and happiness is the true meaning of “well-being.”

You will learn to use mindful awareness of your “here and now” reality to consistently choose well-being and quality of life. You will achieve freedom to be conscious and intentional in your choices. You will have powerful evidence-based methodology for making healthy choices stick. You will loosen the grip of automatic negative habits while building a healthy and positive lifestyle that becomes automatic with practice.

You are a creature of habit—for better or for worse. According to a 2006 Duke University study, at least 40 percent of everything you think, feel, do or say is habitual. We can almost hear the protests. Not me! I’m aware of my behavior. Everything I do is well thought-out and purposeful. Well, not so fast; the evidence says otherwise. You may think your actions are conscious and intentional, but in fact much of your life is habit. You, like virtually everyone else, are largely living your life on autopilot, following your script, and responding much the way you’ve always responded. Habits can be good or bad. Your  “automaticity” can underlie either a life of well-being or a life of stress, frustration, and disappointment.

However, even though much of your behavior is scripted and automatic, you needn’t be discouraged. Learning mindfulness skills for personal mastery and well-being is a game changer. You can develop a discipline of being conscious and intentional. You can take charge of your habits and the choices behind those habits. You can cultivate mindful awareness, consistently make positive choices, and literally rewire your brain,

You will find yourself making positive and healthy choices that become habitual. You can choose personal mastery, a peaceful mind, and well-being, and you can develop mindfulness tools to make positive choices stick!

We work with people who want more out of life. Our clients want to consistently make better choices, and they want those choices to become solid habits. They are ready for change.

We’ve had a very successful psychology and consulting practice for over three decades, but we don’t have a typical client. Some of our clients have high anxiety. Some are depressed. Some have relationship issues. Some struggle with addictions. Some are dealing with food and weight issues. Some have workplace stress. Some are creative people who feel stuck. Some are leaders who want to improve leadership skills. Some want to feel more in control of their lives. Some want to develop a business or launch a new career. Some come seeking life-coaching to help them feel more effective, balanced, successful, and happy. All want more out of life.

What about you? Are you struggling with stress, anxiety, depression, food and weight issues, addictive or compulsive behaviors, stress-induced selfdamaging reactivity or stressful relationship problems? Perhaps you’re simply feeling overstimulated and overwhelmed by daily frustrations and tensions, not having much fun and not living the life you wanted. Do you find yourself struggling to do the very things you really want to do anyway? Are you much too self-critical, unable to feel that your ordinary self is enough?

Perhaps you’re struggling to break free from bad habits or having difficulty forming positive and sustainable new ones. Time and time again you find yourself abandoning good choices and reverting to autopilot, clinging to bad habits that you wish you’d outgrown years ago. You might be telling yourself: “If only I had more willpower I’d get rid of the bad habits once and for all and adopt the good ones.”

Does it seem as though no matter how hard you strive, you’re unable to get what you want? Do you sometimes sabotage your best efforts? Do you find yourself giving up on trying to make changes, abandoning changes that at first seemed all important but later seemed unattainable? Do you move from one new interest to another, looking for instant happiness? Are you forever looking for the one thing that will finally make you permanently happy, only to become frustrated and disappointed, moving on once again? Do you have difficulty sustaining motivation long enough to transform healthy choices into lifetime habits?

Despite good intentions, do you put up barriers to being truly successful? Do you keep getting in your own way? Do you find yourself stuck in your own perpetual Groundhog Day?

We’ve all been there. These are simply human qualities and virtually universal. Don’t be discouraged. What you need is a new way of thinking about change and a proven method for making solid transformational changes that take you to a greater sense of well-being and personal mastery. We’ll introduce you to a science and evidence-based process for being aware and focused and for transforming great choices into powerful and enduring life-skills and habits.

Today you are one step closer to a new you, choosing to live a life where you feel aware and alive and on a positive path to growth and well-being. It’s all about envisioning a positive future, having clarity about selfimposed limitations and habits, and mindfully creating the life you want. Whether you realize it or not, you have the power to create and sustain a high level of personal growth and well-being. It’s all about clearly seeing your choices and embarking on a clear, systematic, and active process leading to lasting change. That’s why we created Mindful Choices Therapy, a system for self-directed personal growth and transformation.

Life coaches usually offer enthusiastic encouragement and accountability. We offer those qualities and much, much more. We offer life coaching on steroids. Are you ready to take areas of your life to a whole new level?

Coaching is for you if your goal is to grow toward being more effective in your work, your relationships, and your overall well-being.

Training is for you if your goal is business or organizational success, great work relationships, and leadership development.

Counseling or therapy is for you if you have a mental health diagnosis or you are seeking help for a specific disorder such as major depression or generalized anxiety.

If you are seeking counseling or therapy you may be able to use your  health insurance online if your insurance company pays for online services or telecounseling.

Most health insurance companies pay for face-to-face counseling or therapy. Consult your health insurance company if you are seeking mental health services and wish to use your health insurance.

A great background for a life Coach

Hello. I'm Bill Shearer and I'd like to talk a little about myself so you will have a better picture of what it's like to be working with me. I'm licensed in California as both a  psychologist and a marriage and family therapist. However,  I mostly enjoy Life Coaching.

I've had multiple careers. I'm a former high school history teacher, and a retired lieutenant colonel in the United States Air Force.

I have a doctorate from the University of Tennessee, an MBA from Pepperdine University, and an MPH (Masters in Public Health) from Loma Linda University. I also have graduate degrees in education, and health services administration, five graduate degrees altogether.

I have been continuously involved in teaching since 1964, when I became a twelfth grade US history teacher. I have taught University courses for several universities and I am currently a professor in both an MBA program and a psychology graduate program

Robin and I have a lifelong mission in facilitating growth and change in others. Mindful Choices Therapy has proven to be an ideal vehicle for personal transformation to well-being.

For the past three decades I have treated psychological problems characterized by lack of balance and resilience. We have three main specializations. I treat eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia and binge eating. I treat stress and anxiety disorders such as generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder, and we work with relationship issues. I love working with couples. All of my work involves helping our clients move beyond stress, anxiety and depression to lives of resilience and well-being.

Through many years of clinical and coaching practice we have developed something we call mindful choices therapy, a transformative approach based on the idea that when mindful awareness is coupled with making great choices, and systematically practicing those choices to the point of powerful and enduring lifelong habits, well-being and thriving result. Robin and I are the authors of Mindful Choices for Well-Being.

Our approach is eclectic and holistic and based upon an integration of mindfulness practices, Buddhist psychology, acceptance and commitment therapy and other mindfulness-based cognitive behavioral therapies, positive psychology, and cognitive neuroscience.

I'm really looking forward to getting to know you and supporting you in your journey toward resilience and well-being. Please let me know what you want to accomplish in our sessions. Ask questions and definitely let me know if there's anything you're not comfortable with.

My mission is to partner with you in your growth and I look forward to working with you.

An Owner's Manual for Being Human

Mindful Choices for Well-Being: Mindful Awareness, Great Choices, Powerful Habits--with Mindful Choices Therapy

This is a book about choices, or more precisely, this is your personal guidebook to making frequent and consistent small choices that will dramatically reduce stress, anxiety and depression while promoting balance and resilience. Even more important, you’ll be introduced to assessment based choices and decisions that can be transformative, leading to deep satisfaction with life, and an overall sense of well-being.

The Shearers developed Mindful Choices Therapy during three decades of clinical practice. A cornerstone of their method is the systematic mastery of 10 interrelated Mindful Choices:

      • Breath awareness and retraining
      • Begin and end days peacefully
      • Mindful eating
      • Cultivating mindfulness
      • Self-reflection
      • Living your values
      • Intentional relating
      • Mindful movement
      • Mindful Choices tools
      • Self-acceptance & Self-compassion

We help clients become mindfully aware, make great choices, and systematically turn great choices into powerful habits with our individua or group Life Coaching for Well-Being.

We call our method "Mindful Choices Therapy," Mindful Choices Coaching, or "Mindful Choices Training" in the corporate world.

The “mindful” part of Mindful Choices Therapy refers to training in moment-to-moment self-awareness, a vital component of making lasting changes. You can't change anything you're not aware of, and most people lack awareness as to the extent their emotions and habits dictate their choices.

The “choices” part of Mindful Choices Therapy refers to the fact that moment by moment, we all have choices in how we respond, and we can learn to respond consistently with awareness and emotional intelligence— In the "now," in the present moment.

The therapy part of Mindful Choices Therapy or Mindful Choices Training refers to the systematic development of solid positive habits leading to greatly increased "Well-Being."

We have created a holistic, action-oriented process for choosing and creating well-being using proven science-based methods for transformational change. We offer a self-directed system for personal well-being developed through decades of clinical practice.

We want our clients to “thrive.” We want them to wake up each morning full of enthusiasm about their lives, feeling confident, optimistic, and empowered, living their values, having compassion for self and others, and finding purpose and meaning in each day. Experiencing their lives with such a high degree of satisfaction and happiness is the true meaning of “well-being.”

Many books on anxiety do not go into lasting ways to reduce stress and anxiety. This one does. It dives into many different areas --- breathing techniques, relationships and eating habits to name a few. The Shearers have identified 10 categories, 10 choices really, that have a major effect on your well-being. The great thing about these is that you can choose to work on the ones that are most meaningful to you. You don't have to do it all at once. You can skip some, come back to others as you see fit. Personally, I have worked on 3 of the 10 and I have seen a marked improvement in anxiety and depression. The book effectively explains these choices and gives examples and exercises to help achieve a better you. Additionally, The Shearers give recommendations for further reading on all 10 categories. So, if you are particularly interested in further developing one of the 10 categories, you have a tailor made list right at your fingertips.

I really found this book motivating and empowering. The Shearers have synthesized decades of experience as frontline clinicians and expanded on well-validated theories to provide us with an effective strategy for overcoming seemingly life enduring patterns. Their approach is straightforward and evidence-based, incorporating skills from mindfulness, acceptance, and compassion-focused therapies and techniques related to neuroplasticity (groundbreaking fields in my opinion). Its applicable to a wide range of problems (e.g. anxiety, depression, stress) because of its focus on function over form, making it very practical. Their model of “dis-ease” and strategy of tracking progress helps readers stay the course towards optimal wellbeing. Overall, this book is a powerful tool that I will continue to use in my everyday life. From surviving to thriving!

Thank you for the clarity and simplicity outlined in this book: without mindfulness we are all just drifting on the constantly changing waves of emotions and life events. This is a practical guide to deep reflection and pausing just long enough to thoughtfully decide our next action instead of simply reacting to a stimulus like an overgrown lab mouse.

By W.S. on November 15, 2017
An easy to read guide on achieving mindfulness in your daily life. The authors provide meaningful tools to track your progress on a daily basis. The book is exceptionally well done. If living a mindful life is what you seek, then this book is your vehicle.

Dr. William and Robin Shearer's groundbreaking work is sure to revolutionize both the mental health world and our daily living. Mindful Choices Therapy (MCT) facilitates our species in making the necessary changes to not just survive, but rather thrive. Shearer's MCT integrates Mindfulness, Acceptance-based therapies, Positive Psychology and the Science of Happiness, as well as Psychobiology/Neuroscience into a powerful tool to help you create the life you want to live. In my work in the field of Addiction Treatment, MCT is sure to help individuals struggling with Self-Compassion and rewiring destructive habits of mind. On the personal level, MCT has transformed my life and brought me peace of mind. Mindful Choices for Well-Being is sure to do the same for you!

How many times have you thought or heard that changing yourself can be difficult. Well it is. But at least with this book it just became a bit easier. There are some very empowering principles here that make sense and are truly motivational. After I learned that fighting or ignoring mental health is counterproductive, there needs to be a way to address all the emotions and thoughts should you decide to face demons and break through to a better sense of well being. In that sense this book became a very good friend.

By E. O. October 22, 2017
This book was very inspiring and insightful to oneself. We as people become unaware of out life because we have become conditioned to live a certain way with the amount of time we have left in the world. When reading the book a quote that stood out for me was "there is no way to prevent dying. But the cure for the fear of death is to make sure that you have lived" . That was truly an eye opening quote for me. This book has helped me to become more aware and mindful of my habits. It has helped me to improve my over all mind set. I encourage anyone who wants to make positive changes in their lives to read this book. The authors did a great job in taking you step by step.

By S.D. on October 17, 2017
Mindful choices for Well-Being is a wonderful way to incorporate mindfulness into daily life to become fully present in each moment or on a therapeutic level to connect with life experiences. Learning to practice mindfulness with Robin Shearer has greatly helped me to become more aware, accepting, and have more self-compassion. I highly recommend this book for everyday use or use in a therapeutic setting.

By M.C. on October 12, 2017
Mindful choices is what it is all about. This book will guide you through breathing techniques that will make anxiety manageble. It will help you identify your thought patterns. Relieve depressiom. Help you to live more in the moment. Stories and excercises that will help your body mind spirit. It is one of the most practical all encompassing books I have read.

By E.Z.on October 19, 2017
I felt really stuck in my ways and hopeless before practicing mindful choices in my daily life, but now I have established positive and permanent changes in my life that I never thought were attainable! Living a healthy life is possible through mindfulness and self-compassion, and I can't thank the author of this book enough for showing me the steps to retrain my negative thinking!

Kirkus Book Review
A guide to mindful decision-making and calmer, more fulfilled living.

Authors Shearer and Shearer begin the book with a large section on the concept of choice, its power in readers’ lives, and their own “Keystone Habits” that aim to aid people in making consistently positive decisions. The next section offers a 100-question assessment to help determine one’s progress in acting with mindfulness and autonomy. The final section is full of specific strategies, exercises, and action plans to help one master the art of making the right decisions in various areas of life. The authors skillfully illustrate their points through the use of charts, diagrams, and anecdotes from conversations with anonymous clients. The book offers a quote by Greek philosopher Epictetus from the first century: “Men are disturbed not by things, but by the view which they take of them.” This sentiment echoes a theme that runs throughout the book—that happiness can be achieved by transforming how one perceives, interprets, and responds to circumstances. The authors also emphasize the simple art of noticing rather than reacting. They note that anxiety is an underlying symptom of many wellness issues and that learning to pause and be mindful will help anxious readers to more positively engage with the world. Overall, this is a book that’s rich with ideas, fresh perspectives, and practical exercises. It’s written in a clear, conversational voice, citing sources and additional resources after each major topic as well as statistical data where appropriate. The aforementioned assessment section effectively lays out statements regarding healthy, mindful habits, asking readers to rank each statement as personally true, partially true, or untrue. This interactivity sets the book apart from other self-help titles, as it encourages personalized engagement with the self.

A successful, thorough guide to self-awareness and personal growth.

Mindful Choices Therapy

In our clinical work we deal with a variety of mental and emotional health issues such as troubled relationships. We have also worked for over 30 years in the treatment of addictions, and eating disorders such as Anorexia Nervosa, and Bulimia. Additionally, we specialize in treating stress and anxiety disorders such as generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder. We have dedicated our professional lives to helping our clients overcome difficulties and move beyond stress, anxiety and depression to lives of resilience and well-being

We see people in individual and group therapy and we have developed a holistic treatment known as Mindful Choices Therapy.

Mindful Choices Therapy has evolved through many years of clinical practice. Years ago the Shearers realized that traditional treatment modalities aimed at reducing distress didn’t go far enough in creating lasting emotional balance and well-being. Their clients wanted more. They wanted to thrive.

Thus Mindful Choices Therapy was created out of the Shearers’ recognition that well-being and thriving are multifaceted and rooted in choice and habit. When mindful awareness is coupled with making great choices, and systematically practicing those choices to the point of powerful and enduring lifelong habits, well-being and thriving result. It’s transformative and Mindful Choices Therapy is designed for that transformation.

The heart of Mindful Choices Therapy is incremental, step-by-step mastery of 10 Mindful Choice areas, all interconnected and all having great impact on well-being. The focus is on assessment based awareness, and systematic and focused practice using knowledge derived from neuroscience as well as a variety of powerful tools for change.

Four pillars or theoretical orientations support Mindful Choices Therapy, and these are seamlessly integrated within the program. These are:

      1. Mindfulness, contemplative traditions, Buddhist psychology, and Stoicism.
      2. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy, Compassion Focused Therapy, and other mindfulness-based cognitive behavioral therapies.
      3. Positive Psychology and Well-Being Theory.
      4 Psychobiology and Cognitive Neuroscience.

For the past 10 years, the Shearers have used Mindful Choices Therapy on hundreds of clients. The results far exceed anything they and their clients experienced when the focus was on merely reducing stress, anxiety and depression, utilizing traditional modalities.

Coaching, Training, or Therapy?
It's vital that our client's understand the distinction.

Mindful Choice Coaching clients want more out of life. Life coaches use the power of commitment to help their clients achieve positive and measurable results in their lives. Life coaching is a holistic process helping people achieve meaning and balance, and measurable goal attainment. Our program: Mindful Choices for Well-Being generally looks at your entire life rather than a particular area. However, we sometimes focus on a specific need such as relationship coaching, or leadership coaching. Fundamentally, we're here to help you achieve the results you desire.

Mindful Choices Training is directed toward business and organizations. We're here to help with career goals, educational goals, and leadership development.

Mindful Choices Therapy is for those with psychological, emotional, or mental health problems significant enough to have a mental health diagnosis. Health insurance may be utilized. We are licensed mental health professionals, as well as Life Coaches, and we make a distinction between coaching and training, which requires no license and no diagnosis, and therapy where we are operating as licensed professionals within a mental health setting.

Relationship Coaching

You Don't Know What You Don't Know – until You Do!

Mindfulness is knowing! Imagine being aware, insightful, purposeful, and effective, moment by moment, in your most important relationship. Imagine being calm and focused, yet empathic and understanding. Imagine not getting sidetracked by resentments or defensiveness, but instead having the presence of mind to make emotionally intelligent choices, choices that benefit both you and your partner, while helping you build a strong relationship. This is the power of “mindfulness” when mindfulness is being used to promote relational excellence through the development of powerful positive habits.

Imagine the Possibilities

We offer you training in relational excellence. In an ideal world, it’s training that most of us should’ve received by third-grade, but didn’t. You’ve probably received many years of education but we’re betting there wasn’t much formal, or even informal, education for being in relationship. Other subjects of course were important, yet who could argue that learning computer skills or world history, while vitally important subjects, are more important than learning how to be effective in relationships?

We have created a program to not only help you manage the behaviors that negatively impact your relationship, but it’s also a guide on a clear and compelling pathway to relational excellence. This book is a self-directed system for personal transformation developed through decades of clinical practice.

We want you to “thrive” in your relationship. We want you to wake up each morning full of enthusiasm about being part of a couple. We want you to feel confident, optimistic, and empowered, living your values, having compassion for yourself and your partner, and finding purpose and meaning in being together. Experiencing your relationship with such a high degree of satisfaction and happiness is a key component of “well-being.”

This is coaching for mindfulness and transformation. You will learn to use mindful awareness of your “here and now” reality to consistently choose mindful relating and relational excellence. You will achieve freedom to be conscious and intentional in your choices. You will have powerful evidence-based methodology for making healthy choices stick. You will loosen the grip of automatic negative habits while building healthy and positive relationship skills that become automatic with practice.

What do you want more of?

How Is ThisProgram Different?

You probably know what you don’t want, but what do you want more of in your life?

Do you want to feel more centered and balanced? More focused and creative? More energized and engaged? More physical strength, vitality, energy, and good health? More confidence and feelings of self-worth? More self-acceptance? More satisfying relationships? Greater satisfaction with your work life? More control over your personal life? More fun? More contentment and peacefulness?

Do you want to be powerfully motivated for sustained goal-directed behavior leading to well-being?

This is a systematic, holistic, and action-oriented process of choosing and creating well-being. It’s  a process of regularly assessing your well-being across ten Mindful Choices dimensions, focusing your attention, sustaining a high level of motivation, and creating lasting positive changes through ongoing intention, awareness, focus, and practice.

We integrate knowledge from mindfulness and contemplative traditions, Buddhist psychology, Stoicism, positive psychology, neuroscience, and acceptance and mindfulness-based behavioral therapies. We not only give you the tools to manage stress, anxiety, and depression but will also take you well beyond “normal” to a life of “thriving.”

Recognizing that at least 40 percent of everything you do is habitual, this book utilizes cutting-edge research and a process we call “habitualizing” to help you systematically develop powerful and positive habits that lead to a high level of satisfaction with your life. You’ll learn how to use mindfulness, focused attention, and practice to bring about transformational changes where powerful positive foundational habits seem effortless. You’ll learn how to use your mind to actually change your brain—in other words, focused attention leading to changes in your brain’s circuitry, or “experience based self-directed neuroplasticity.” In short, this book is about systematically practicing brain-based behavioral changes that powerfully and positively impact your well-being.

We designed this program for you if you are wanting to transcend unwelcome aspects of your life, instead taking charge and transforming a life of good intentions, frustration, and disappointment to a life of action, meaning, and satisfaction—a life you choose, a life of thriving! While most people continue into their future by perpetually and frustratingly re-creating unwelcome elements of their past, this book is about redesigning your life and systematically creating the life you want.
